Cross confirmed as Swifts Apprentice Coach for 2015

Netball NSW is pleased to confirm Amber Cross has been appointed as Apprentice Coach to the NSW Swifts for the 2015 ANZ Championship.

An initiative introduced for the 2014 season, Cross will be given unique insight into the planning, preparation, competition and review phases during her season-long apprenticeship under the guidance of Head Coach Rob Wright.

An Emerging Elite coach hailing from Wyong District Netball Association, Cross will return to the NSW 17/U Team as Assistant Coach for the second consecutive year at the 2015 National Netball Championships.

Cross has over 20 years of coaching experience, including her role as Head Coach of the Central Coast Academy of Sport (CCAS) and Central Coast DOOLEYS State League Division 3 team, and in 2014 was selected as part of Netball Australia’s Targeted Coach Program.

“We are very pleased to offer Amber this unique insight into coaching at the elite level.  Amber has a bright coaching future, as seen in her inclusion of the 11-strong Targeted Coach Program, and we believe this Apprenticeship will assist her along her development pathway,” General Manager – High Performance (interim) Nikki Horton said.

“There are only 10 ANZ Championship franchises – five based in Australia – so there is plenty of competition for a coaching role when they become available.  By offering our Swifts Apprenticeship we are giving coaches like Amber a taste of what it takes to coach at the top level, and hopefully the opportunity motivates them to continue to work on their craft and reach their full potential.”

Cross becomes the third NSW Swifts Apprentice Coach after State Team Head Coaches Briony Akle (NSW 19/U) and Moira Gaha (NSW 17/U) were appointed apprenticeships during the 2014 ANZ Championship. Cross will work with the Swifts coaching team of Wright, Assistant Coach Megan Anderson and NSWIS Head Coach/NSW Swifts Assistant Coach Anita Keelan through to 31 August, 2015.

The NSW Swifts began their pre-season training in December, however the first test for their 2015 campaign will be in early February when Netball NSW hosts the 2015 ANZ Championship Official Pre-Season Summer Shootout at Netball Central.
