After a slow start in the Division Two Preliminary Final, Manly-Warringah put their foot down to defeat defending champions Eastwood Ryde, 60-50, to secure their spot in the Grand Final next Tuesday at 8.30pm against Sutherland Shire.
Eastwood Ryde opened the scoring with their two shooters sharing the load, whilst Manly-Warringah’s GS was a clear target for feeders with her aerial acrobatics. While Eastwood Ryde looked to settle first and took a six goal lead at the first break, Manly-Warringah found their rhythm and hinted at what was to come in the final minutes.
The eventual champions put on a display in the second quarter, outscoring Eastwood Ryde 18 goals to 10, including a run of five consecutive in the final minute where the midcourt fed beautifully into the GS to find the post. The run gave Manly-Warringah a two goal buffer at half-time, 28-26.
Despite changing their GS, Manly-Warringah maintained their momentum into the second half and soon had pulled out to a healthy lead halfway through the third. Six goals down and after a timeout Eastwood Ryde made their first changes to reignite their side. The ploy worked with Eastwood Ryde finishing strongly, however still chasing a five goal deficit on the scoreboard at the final break; Manly-Warringah ahead, 46-41.
With Eastwood Ryde desperate to close the gap, throwing everything into the contest and moving the ball quickly to their shooters to capitalise, errors began creeping into the match. In the end Manly-Warringah were able to run out the game to win by 10 goals.
It was an even affair in the opening quarter of the Division ThreePreliminary Final, with Northern Suburbs and Ku-ring-gai trading goals for most of the opening 15 minutes. Ku-ring-gai looked to settle first by opening up a slim three goal lead, however Northern Suburbs regathered to take a two goal advantage into the first break, 10-8.
From there Northern Suburbs looked to have victory in their hands. There tall defenders limited the influence of Ku-ring-gai’s tall shooters, cutting down the high lob to create the turnover. A dominant second quarter saw Northern Suburbs double Ku-ring-gai’s score – 12 goals to six – to extend their lead at half-time, 22-14.
Northern Suburbs picked up where they left off for the second half, with Ku-ring-gai’s defenders giving their shooters too much space to work with. Nine goals down Ku-ring-gai called a timeout to change up their shooting end. The personnel change made an immediate impact with their shorter shooters moving the circle well, seeing Ku-ring-gai claw back the deficit to trail by six at the final break, 30-24.
The momentum stayed with Ku-ring-gai who put up five goals to two in the first five minutes to close the gap. Despite being their lowest scoring quarter, Northern Suburbs held on to take honours, 39-32, to book their spot in the Grand Final against 2012 Runners-Up Randwick next Tuesday at 7pm.
Illawarra enjoyed a stunning second half performance to defeat Eastwood Ryde by one goal, 40-39, to secure their spot in the Division Four decider against Sutherland Shire next Tuesday at 7pm.
The entire 60 minutes was an arm-wrestle between the two sides sharing the lead, with Eastwood Ryde taking honours in the first half before Illawarra finished strongest to take victory in the final minute.
Eastwood Ryde began the match strongest, at one stage opening up a five goal buffer before Illawarra closed the gap to trail by two at the first break, 12-10. Illawarra enjoyed a run of goals for the start of the second quarter, only to hit the lead with five minutes left on the clock for the first half. However Eastwood Ryde regathered and with a goal on the buzzer trailed Illawarra by a single goal, 35-34.
Illawarra put their foot down for the final 15 minutes, putting on a run of goals to open up a five goal lead. It took Eastwood Ryde five minutes to post their first goal of the final quarter, igniting the side to chase down the deficit. Slowing Eastwood Ryde worked hard and with two minutes left on the clock hit the front.
Trading goals in the final minutes, players threw themselves into the contest to win possession for their side, and it wasn’t until the final 30 seconds that Illawarra found the net to score the winning goal to advance to the Grand Final next week.
