Netball Australia has confirmed NSW representative Kristina Brice has been called up to the Australian Diamonds as a training partner for the upcoming Netball Quad Series in South Africa and England.
The GIANTS Netball goal shooter is a late call-up to the travelling squad after the withdrawal of Stephanie Wood through injury, and joins GIANTS teammate Susan Pettitt for the tour against NZ Silver Ferns, England Roses and South Africa SPAR Proteas.
With the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games just 16 months away, and Netball World Cup hosted in Liverpool in 2019, the call up puts Brice in a position to contest selection into the Diamonds squad.
“I think it will put me in a good spot to start looking into getting into the team,” said Brice.
“Being a training partner is where a lot of players have started from. Being able to have the experience travelling with the team and learning about their standards will help me to start getting my netball up to the consistency required of the Diamonds.”
As a training partner, the 22 year old will be exposed to the Diamonds’ tour environment, providing support for the national team.
“This is the right time for us to provide an emerging young talent an opportunity to immerse themselves in our environment and learn what it takes to represent our country,” explained Diamonds coach Lisa Alexander.
“National selectors and I have been carefully monitoring Kristina’s progress over the past year and believe she will benefit from joining our touring group. She has been diligent in her pre-season training and has performed well in pre-season matches.”
Brice was a member of the 2013 Netball World Youth Cup Team alongside current Diamonds Kim Ravaillion, Paige Hadley, Gabi Simpson, Gretel Tippett and Jo Weston.
The shooter was named Best New Talent in the 2016 Trans-Tasman Netball League after a breakout season as a replacement player for the Adelaide Thunderbirds, and holds the record for the most goals scored by an individual in an Australian Netball League season, set in 2014 – the same year in which she was named Most Valued Player alongside NSW compatriot Ashleigh Brazill.
The Diamonds will gather in Perth, WA for a pre-departure camp this Thursday 19 January, before flying out to South Africa on Sunday evening, 22 January.
