Letton Realises A Childhood Dream

In November, Netball Australia announced the athletes selected in the Australian Diamonds team for a Tour of England in January, with long-time NSW representative April Letton selected for her debut after impressive performances for the FastNet Diamonds (2010-2011) and Fast5 Diamonds (2012).

Netballnsw.com caught up with April to discuss her excitement about taking the next step in her international netball career and becoming a Diamond…

When April took the call from Head Coach Lisa Alexander early last week, she couldn’t believe what she was hearing – she had made her first Australian Diamonds team.

“When I answered the phone, Lisa asked me if I was sitting down…at first I wasn’t sure what was happening, but when she told me that I’d be a Diamonds player for the Tour of England I just burst with excitement!” April recalls.

“It’s been a dream of mine since I was a little girl to play for Australia, and for it to happen so soon is unbelievable…to have that sort of dream and goal ticked off the list is a surreal feeling.”

When Alexander announced April’s inclusion, she made mention of her impressive performance at the recent Fast5 Netball World Series held in Auckland earlier this month.

“I thought that I played pretty well during the Fast5 tournament, however you can never expect anything, and I certainly wasn’t expecting a Diamonds call up!”

“Every time I pull on the Green and Gold for Australia, I want to perform the best that I can…the England tour is a fantastic opportunity for me to experience the ‘big time’ against a quality opposition.”

April with join her NSW Swifts teammates Mo’onia Gerrard and Susan Pratley, who have also been selected for the three-match Tour of England.

“It’s comforting to know I will have Mo’onia and Susan with me on tour.  They are good friends of mine but also really experienced international players, so I know I can go to them for any advice or tips,” April said.
