NSW Players Selected for Diamonds tour of England

Six NSW representatives have been selected for the Australian Diamonds three-game tour of England in January.

NSW Swift April Letton and NSW representative Kimberley Ravaillion have been named in their first Australian Diamonds team for the tour following strong performances for the Fast5 Diamonds at the recent Netball World Series.

They join NSW Swifts Mo’onia Gerrard and Susan Pratley, as well as NSW juniors Erin Bell and Catherine Cox in the team.

Following the tour April, Mo’onia and Susan will return to NSW Swifts pre-season training as the team prepares for the 2013 ANZ Championship. The Australian Diamonds have named two debutants for January’s Tour of England with coach Lisa Alexander selecting Kimberley Ravaillion and April Letton following strong performances at the recent Fast5 Netball World Series.

Defender Letton, 22, and mid-courter Ravaillion, 19, are the latest inclusions as Alexander continues to build Australia’s international depth ahead of the 2014 Commonwealth Games and 2015 World Netball Championships in Sydney.

Chanel Gomes, 21, made her international debut against South Africa during last month’s Holden Netball Quad Series and has again been selected in the 12-player team that features the experienced Diamonds captain Natalie von Bertouch and vice-captain Catherine Cox.

“Chanel, April and Kim performed and competed well at the Fast5 Netball World Series and certainly gave selectors a lot of confidence that they could take the next step up to be tested in the international arena,” Alexander said of the emerging talents.

With a number of players yet to return from injury, a long term approach was taken with selection for the tour of England to give those players enough time to complete their rehabilitation properly and make a full return to training ahead of the 2013 ANZ Championship season.

Caitlin Thwaites has been omitted from the team that contested the recent Quad Series while Bianca Chatfield and Chelsea Pitman are unavailable for the three-Test series against the world’s third ranked team.

“We’re aiming to come away with three victories and this tour gives us the opportunity to put our young players into that international environment,” Alexander said.

The Australian Diamonds commence their Tour of England with the first test at the University of Bath on Sunday 20 January, before the series moves to Wembley Arena and NIA Birmingham for the second and thirds Tests on Wednesday 23 and Saturday 26 January, respectively (local time).

Held every year at the conclusion of the domestic and international calendars, the Australian Netball Awards are being held this Saturday 24 November at the Grand Hyatt in Melbourne to celebrate season 2012.

Netball NSW will bring you all the award winners next week – good luck to all 2012 nominees!
