NSW umpires head to Singapore

Our Netball NSW umpires keep flying the flag for our State, with news two officials are off to Singapore this weekend to officiate the 2014 Mission Foods Asian Netball Championships.

Hayley Burgess from Sutherland Shire and Bronwen Adams from Manly-Warringah are two of just three Australian umpires who will oversee the international tournament, the most prestigious netball championships in Asia.

Played once every four years, the 2014 competition will also act as the region’s qualifying event for  Netball World Cup 2015 in Sydney.

As part of their involvement in the Netball Australia Emerging Umpires Talent Program, both umpires were nominated by Netball Australia to attend the tournament as another development opportunity.

While this is Burgess’ first international tournament, Adams has previously officiated an international School Girls competition.  However the 31-year-old admits this allocation is something altogether different and exciting.

“I did go to International School Girls, which is a trans-Tasman competition, so that was my very first foray [into international competition]… but that was something quite junior compared to going and doing something like [the] Asian Championships,” Adams said.

“The Asian Netball Championship determines the rankings for the Asian Region for the Netball World Cup, so obviously it’s something which is very important.”

“I’ll be going to the Asian Championships with fellow New South Wales umpire Hayley Burgess, so it’s really nice to be going with someone who is a long time peer and also a good friend,” Adams concluded.

The 2014 Mission Foods Asian Netball Championships runs from Sunday 7 to Sunday 14 September, and will feature 10 nations from around the region, including defending Champions and hosts Singapore.

The tournament has been running since 1985, and this year will be held at the Singapore Sports Hub OCBC Arena.

Netball NSW would like to congratulate both Browen and Hayley on their appointments, and wish them and the competing teams all the best for the Championships.
