Bathurst break Orange 21-year winning streak

The Annual West Central West (WCW) Regional Divisions 1, 2, and 3 Grand Finals took place on the Sunday 2 April in Orange with representative teams from the host town, Mudgee, Bathurst, Nyngan, Cowra, Forbes, Cobar, Western Region Academy of Sport (WRAS) and Dubbo playing off for the 2017 titles.

Division 1

Bathurst caused the upset of the decade by ending the 21-year winning streak of Orange to claim a convincing victory on the weekend 51-43.

Orange went into the afternoon Grand Final undefeated, while Bathurst had to play off for their place in the last two.

From the first whistle Bathurst took the lead, with their shooters only missing four goals the whole game. Orange tried to reshuffle positions to defend against the strong offense of the Bathurst team but, unfortunately for Orange, it wasn’t enough and Bathurst won out to become the 2017 WCW Regional Champions.

Division 2

A fast-paced division two Grand Final saw Orange take on Forbes with the former going into the Grand Final undefeated through the rounds.

Forbes put up a great contest in the first half and matched their opponents goal for goal, however, Orange’s attacking front was too good as they secured the win by a margin of 10 goals, 51-41.

Forbes, however, are steadily growing with a third place in 2016 improved on with a second place finish in 2017.

Division 3

The Division 3 Grand Final match up was a surprise, with WRAS fighting off Orange in their preliminary final to secure their position in the Grand Final against an undefeated Bathurst.

The game was a tough, skillful encounter as both teams put everything in to secure the title. In the end, Bathurst earned the victory 47-35.
