Grafton have successfully defended their 2014 title after defeating Lismore, 41-37, in the 2015 Far North Coast Regional State League Grand Final.
After contesting five regular rounds over two days, the fierce rivals repeated history by meeting in the title-decider for the first time since 2011 with Grafton reversing the result to be crowned 2015 Champions last Sunday (26 April).
It was Lismore who entered the Grand Final with momentum, having yet to drop a game this season, including getting the upper hand over Grafton by claiming a six-goal victory when the two last met on the opening day’s play.
The match began on relatively equal footing, with Grafton taking a minor one-goal lead at the first break before Lismore came back in the second, outscoring the eventual Champions 11 goals to eight to take a three-goal buffer into the long break.
However history will show the third quarter was the telling period of the game, with Grafton putting up a raft of goals – 16 to Lismore’s six – to take a commanding lead on the game.
Whilst Lismore recovered to win the final 15 minutes by three goals, the margin was too great to catch up, with Grafton posting a four-goal victory to claim back-to-back Far North Coast titles.
Grafton will now be invited to participate in the 2015 GrainCorp Inter-Regional State League competition to be held at Netball NSW’s brand new $35 million centre of excellence, Netball Central, on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 September.
The 2015 GrainCorp Inter-Regional State League will bring together Division 1 Champions (or representatives) from each region to contest a round-robin style tournament before playing out a Finals Series to determine the 2015 Inter-Regional State League Champion.
North Coast Regional State League action continues…
State League action continues at Nambucca Valley this Sunday 3 May with the Association hosting the second and final regular round matches for the 2015 North Coast Regional State League.
Hastings Valley Opens lead the competition after contesting the opening day’s play on Sunday 19 April, sitting atop the ladder with four wins and a single loss so far. They’re closely followed by their 35’s counterparts in second, while Taree sit in third holding Woolgoolga in fourth by goals for/against percentage.
All seven teams will contest the final seven regular rounds, before the Finals Series in a couple of weeks on Sunday 17 May with venue to be confirmed.
As with Grafton mentioned above, once determined, the 2015 North Coast Champion will be invited to the GrainCorp Inter-Regional State League competition at Netball Central later in the year.
Best of luck to all participants!
