Hastings Valley off to State Cup

Hastings Valley Netball Association has booked their place in the 2016 Netball NSW State Cup after taking out the Division 1 title at the North Coast Regional League finals on Sunday 1 May.

The Netball NSW State Cup, which takes place on 24-25 September at Netball Central, is a 24-team Open Age competition which will see the seven Regional League Division 1 winners come up against the top 17 Metro League teams to contest for the title of 2016 State Champion.

Hastings Valley had a good over a young Coffs Harbour team in their semi-final last weekend, and had too much for the home side Woolgoolga in the decider – running out 60-33 winners.

Earlier in the day, Woolgoolga won a thriller of a semi-final against Taree which ended 56-56 at full-time before the hosts booked a place in the final in extra time.

In Division 2 the Valley Vipers 35s (from Nambucca Valley) took out the title after beating Macleay Opens 53-50 in a closely-contested final. The Division 3 Grand Final, meanwhile, was won by Great Lakes 17s, who defeated Woolgoolga 50-32.

It was a massive weekend for the Woolgoolga Netball Association, who also had their official opening of their new courts on Saturday 30 April.

“We are so thrilled to have been able to host the 2016 North Coast Regional League Finals. We’ve had such great feedback from all the Associations and thank them for travelling to the Northern most Association in the North Coast region,” Woolgoolga President Sandra Thorpe said on the final day of play.

“Today we’ve proved to ourselves that we can host these types of events, and we are looking forward to being able to host more in the future.”

Also at the event, four National C Umpiring Badges were awarded to Mia Watts and Layne Foster (Hastings Valley NA), Alex McNeill (Woolgoolga NA) and Tess Bohringer (Coffs Harbour NA), while Janine Kennewell (Taree & Districts NA) and Amanda Wicks (Macleay NA) were awarded their National B Badges.
