2017 Schools Cup Champions revealed

The 2017 Schools Cup has concluded following the last day of the State Finals held at the home of Netball NSW, Genea Netball Centre.

Following Tumut Public School taking out Years 5/6 Mixed yesterday, the Years 7/8 and Years 9/10 Girls and Boys divisions held their State Finals today, Wednesday 20 September.

Westfields Sports High School were the big winners of the day by taking out both of the Girls divisions, while St Paul’s College, Kempsey (Years 7/8) and Da Le Salle College (Years 9/10) claimed the Boys titles.

It was a record-breaking year for Schools Cup with more than 1,100 teams participated in the 2017 competition, with just 32 Regional Finalists progressing to today’s State Finals. In another positive for the competition, for the first time ever all eight Regions from across NSW were represented in the Boys’ divisions, showcasing Schools Cup’s growing popularity amongst the community.

Netball NSW Board Director Rodney Watson OAM paid tribute to the feat, saying all teams should be proud of their achievements to finish in the top percentile of participants.

“This competition has seen 1,108 teams participate this year, so for you to be standing here today representing your Region you should be very proud of your achievement,” Watson said at the closing presentations.

“Today we see Schools visiting from as far north as Byron Bay, to as south as Narooma, as well as Dubbo from out west. This competition has a far-reaching capability that we’re extremely proud of, and I thank you for making the journey to Genea Netball Centre today.

“I would also like to thank our sponsors, First National Real Estate, for their support, and for all the teachers, umpires, parents and supporters.

“Lastly, thank you to the students for producing some wonderfully entertaining netball today. You all played with great spirit and sportsmanship, and we look forward to seeing you back here again in 2018.”

The Schools Cup is an initiative by Netball NSW to provide New South Wales primary and secondary school students with the opportunity to enjoy netball in an inclusive and enjoyable environment. The competition is available to male and female students from Public, Independent and Catholic systems in Years Five, Six, Seven, Eight, Nine and Ten.

Now in its fifth year, Schools Cup has grown from 3,000 participants in the inaugural year, to over 10,000 participants in 2017!
