Tumut crowned State Champions

The 2017 Schools Cup State Finals have got off to an exciting start, with Tumut Public School claiming the Years 5/6 Mixed Champions title at the home of Netball NSW, Genea Netball Centre.

It was an all-regional Grand Final, with Tumut (Riverina) coming up against neighbouring Shell Cove Public School (South Coast). While Tumut looked in the driver’s seat at half-time with a handy four-goal lead, Shell Cove produced a stunning second half to get back on equal pegging. However their efforts couldn’t be sustained as Tumut ran out to 18-13 victors.

The Grand Final followed a thrilling day of pool matches, followed by the top teams contesting the Finals; St Joseph’s Catholic Primary – Taree (North Coast) and Harbord Public (Sydney Metro) rounding out the top four.

A record number of 592 teams entered the Years 5/6 Mixed division in this year’s Schools Cup, showcasing the growing popularity the competition has since being introduced in 2013.

Netball NSW President Wendy Archer AM summed it up perfectly during the presentations.

“I would like to congratulate all of you, because to me you’re all winners today,” she said.

“To get to a Grand Final is very special, but particularly in the Schools Cup competition as there are so many stages you have to go through to get here. You’re the top teams out of hundreds who have participated this year, and for that you should feel very proud.

“Schools Cup is very special to Netball NSW, because at the end of the day kids are out there and enjoying their sport. And we hope you will continue to enjoy playing and we will see you again next year.

“Finally, thank you to our partners First National Real Estate for their support of the 2017 Schools Cup. Also a big thank you to the schools, the principals, the teachers and the parents for your support of the students here today.”

The Schools Cup is an initiative by Netball NSW to provide New South Wales primary and secondary school students with the opportunity to enjoy netball in an inclusive and enjoyable environment. The competition is available to male and female students from Public, Independent and Catholic systems in Years Five, Six, Seven, Eight, Nine and Ten.

Now in its fifth year, Schools Cup has grown from 3,000 participants in the inaugural year, to over 10,000 participants in 2017!

The 2017 Schools Cup Years 7/8 and Years 9/10 State Finals will be held tomorrow, Wednesday 20 September, at Genea Netball Centre.
