Three wonderful opening ceremonies have marked the start of the 2016 SAMSUNG State Age Championships, the 48th installment of one of Netball NSW’s biggest events.

The State Age Championships start today, Saturday 2 July, and will run until Monday at the Campbelltown District, Bankstown City and Illawarra District Netball Associations.

More than 3,300 athletes from 309 teams representing 87 Associations will take the courts for what promises to an action-packed three days of netball at the end of which the 2016 State Age Champions will be crowned.

Teams in the Championship Division will be in action in Campbelltown, with Bankstown City hosting teams from Division Two and Illawarra welcoming participants from Divisions Three and Four.

As per tradition, four age groups – 15/U, 14/U, 13/U and 12/U, will contest the divisions. As well as the players, over 400 coaches and 500 umpires will be joined by tens of thousands of spectators, making the State Age Championships one of the largest female sports tournaments in the Southern Hemisphere.

We’ve also had our first winners of the weekend with Taree and District taking out the Parade of Districts awards at both Bankstown City and Illawarra, while Hills District took the honours at Campbelltown.

“I am delighted to welcome all our players, umpires, spectators, and partners to our 2016 SAMSUNG State Age Championships,” Netball NSW President Wendy Archer said.

“You are all part of this wonderful spectacle which is now in its 48th year.

“As I welcome you all here today at the Campbelltown District Netball Association there are two other wonderful ceremonies taking place at Bankstown City Netball Association and Illawarra District Netball Association.

“There is a huge amount of netball to be played between now and the last whistle on Monday afternoon to determine our State Age champions for this year.

“To all of our players I wish you the very best of luck for the weekend, I hope that you remain injury free and make new friends and most of all have fun and enjoy your netball.”

Netball NSW would like to take this opportunity to thank SAMSUNG, Naming Rights Partner of the 2016 Netball NSW State Age Championships, as well as Major Partners Coast 2 Coast, The Athletes’ Foot, The Australian College of Physical Education (ACPE) and The Kids’ Cancer Project for their continued support.
