NSW 21/U are Tassie bound and ready

Head Coach of the New South Wales 21 & Under side, Maria Lynch can’t wait for Sunday to get here.

Her 21/U side travel to Launceston, Tasmania on Sunday to commence their week long national title campaign and are feeling ready to take on the huge challenges that lay ahead.

“We are a really young and exciting team, with options across the court and different combinations to put out there”, said Lynch on the eve of their final training sessions at Netball Central on Friday evening.

“I am really pleased with the balance we have and looking forward to put out some different things (on court)… and I feel that we will be able to surprise our opponents at times, which is great.”

We have a really fresh group of players and they can’t wait to get out there and start the campaign. As individuals they have a real flair and creativity about them, but then as a group they are even more exciting to watch and we are encouraging this brand of netball.”

The title of 2016 21/U National champion will be hotly contested, with added pressure on the reigning champions, South Australia who are chasing a place in history by becoming the third state to win the national title in four consecutive years.

Only two states have managed to achieve such a feat since the competitions’ inception; Victoria twice and New South Wales securing the titles from 2008 – 2011.
South Australia has won 21 consecutive matches on its way to winning the past three titles 2013, 2014 and 2015, and New South Wales will meet the current title holders on Day One of the competition, Tuesday 8 March at 5.30pm, local time.

“We really respect what the South Australian side have achieved (in 2013 – 2015) and they have set the bar high for the rest of the team – and it now encourages us to challenge ourselves and we are looking to rise the occasion.  They (SA) are always a surprise package – they are unique in their approach and you need to be able to take that on for 60 minutes.”

The tournament gets underway at The Silverdome, Launceston, on Tuesday morning, 8 March, at 9am (AEDT). Click here for the 2016 draw and to get up-to-date results and shooting stats throughout the tournament.
