Netball NSW Blues enjoy victory over Darters

The Netball NSW Blues (NNSW) have defeated the Canberra Darters, 53-42, in their first match of Week 6 of the 2013 Australian Netball League (ANL), being contested in Melbourne.

It was a dominant third quarter, which the NNSW Blues shot 20 goals while keeping the Darters to 11, that set up the victory.

NNSW Blues Head Coach Moira Gaha said it was a terrific effort from her young charges to deliver tonight’s victory.

“I’m really proud of the girls – every player that took the court tonight did their job and supported each other.  They backed themselves and have been rewarded with a win,” Gaha said.

“It did take us awhile to get into the game, but at the first break we talked about trusting each other and letting the ball go.  After that we got into a rhythm, moved the ball, stay calmed and finished the game strongly.”

“Tonight’s win is a great start to the weekend; we can take tonight’s rhythm and confidence into tomorrow against the Victorian Fury.  But right now we will enjoy the win,” Gaha said.

Both sides took a few minutes to settle in to the tempo of the match and made some unforced errors after a few lapses in concentration.

The Darters looked to goal shooter Jo Pivac as their main scoring option, but with the timing of their feeds slightly off and strong defensive hands from the NNSW Blues defensive pair of CK Nicole Styles and GD Jessica Calderara, they struggled to find the long feed into the circle.

After finding their rhythm in the second quarter the NNSW Blues had drawn back the deficit with the scores locked at 22-22 going into the second half.

It was a third quarter breakaway by the young NSW side that set up the win, outscoring the Darters 20 goals to 10. The NNSW Blues attacking end stood tall and moved the ball swiftly into the circle for some quick scoring opportunities.

NNSW Blues wing defence Katie Maguire led from the front throughout the duration of the game and was able to build the transitional play whilst maintaining the pressure on her opponent.

With Vice-Captain Vanessa Mullampy nailing 30 goals from 36 attempts, and strong support from shooting partner Holly Pearce and 2012 ANL debutant Georgia M Marshall at the wind, the young side were able to get on top of the Darters.

The Canberra side attempted to claw back the deficit in the final quarter, however the NNSW Blues held out to finish 11 goal victors.

The NNSW Blues will be back on court tomorrow, Sunday 11 August, to meet hosts and competition leaders the Victorian Fury at 12.30pm.
