The Netball NSW Waratahs have secured their second win over the Canberra Darters in the space of two days after a strong performance at Netball Central on Sunday 8 May.
The Waratahs, who won Saturday’s encounter between the sides 52-37, came out firing again in the opening half, and despite a good rally from the Darters in the third quarter, the home side were too strong in the last and ran out 65-46 winners.
The NSW shooters put in a wonderful performance for the Waratahs with Kiera Austin shooting an impressive 29 goals from 32 attempts, while Alison Miller was also in good form – scoring 30 from 35 – and Vanessa Mullampy put in a perfect quarter with six from six.
The opening quarter was a good one from the Waratahs, with Kaitlyn Bryce, Sophie Halpin and Taylah Davies controlling the pace of the game in the mid court, giving their shooters plenty of possession. The Darters started to score some goals mid-way through the period, however, the Waratahs were able to halt the resurgence and had an 18-10 lead going into the first break.
Much like Saturday’s game, the Waratahs were again dominant in the second quarter and used it to build a lead the Darters never seemed likely to haul in. Austin and Miller were dominant and soon the home side had a 12-point advantage. That was soon extended to 19 points as the Waratahs took out the quarter 19-8 to be in a dominant position at the long break 37-18.
However, despite being well down on the scoreboard, the Darters kept fighting and put in a solid quarter of netball in the third to win it 15-9 and worry the Waratahs heading into the final period. There were some impressive performances from the Canberra side with goal attack Lauren Cantwell and centre Georgia Clayden at the heart of their effort.
But what hope the Darters had in the final quarter was quickly put to rest by the Waratahs as they again stepped up the tempo of the game to take the it 19-13 and secure a 19-goal win the process.
