NSW finish one and one after first day of Nationals

NSW 19/U Team has finished with one win and one loss after South Australia claimed a seven goal victory over NSW, 30-23, in their closely-contested Round Two match at the 19/U National Netball Championships in Darwin.  SA led at every interchange, extending their lead to seven at three quarter time which they maintained through until the final whistle.

The first quarters were evenly contested as the two sides traded goals.  As the game began to speed up with the teams trying to break the tough one-on-one defence, errors became more frequent.  It wasn’t until the final minutes of the first half that SA began to take control, putting on seven goals to NSW two to go into the big break with a three goal lead, 17-14.

NSW opened the score for the second half, but the momentum stayed with the SA side as their experienced defensive duo GK Sarah Klau and GD Maddy Turner did their best to limit the influence of the NSW shooters.

NSW captain Brooke Lawrence almost ran herself into exhaustion at C as she tried her best to rally her side.  Led by their spirited captain, NSW closed the gap on the scoreboard to four goals.  However with five minutes left on the clock SA dominated play to claim their first win of the 19/U Nationals tournament.

Head Coach Jo Macdermid says NSW is still very much testing their combinations within the 19/U team.

“Back home at training we discovered and developed a lot of different combinations and now we are here at Nationals it’s about finding the right fit against the other States,” Macdermid said.

“We are disappointed to lose, but there is still plenty of netball to be played so we will rest up and prepare for Day Two of competition tomorrow.”

NSW are back on court tomorrow morning to take on Northern Territory at 12.30pm (local time). Stay tuned to facebook.com/OfficialNetballNSW for quarter score updates and photos.
