The Canberra GIANTS finished their Australian Netball League campaign in third position following a thrilling 71-64 win against the Queensland Fusion in Perth.
The GIANTS, a joint venture between Netball NSW and Netball ACT, were dominant until halfway through the third quarter when the Fusion leveled the scores.
The final term was a gripping affair and with less than ten seconds to go, the GIANTS scored and looked to have the game in their keeping.
However, with the aid of the centre pass the Fusion responded and leveled the scores right on full-time to take the game into golden quarter.
With a three-goal lead after the first half of golden quarter, the GIANTS ran away with the game and won by seven goals.
It was the second game within 24 hours that the GIANTS were forced into a golden quarter having lost their Semi Final against the Western Sting 72-66 after scores were locked at 58-all at full-time.
“It’s testament of how close the Australian Netball League has been this year that both our games this weekend went into golden quarter,” GIANTS co-coach Sharyn Hill said.
“We’re really proud with the effort our girls put into both matches and throughout the season.
“They’ve come along way as a group and even after the loss to the Sting they picked themselves up from the disappointment to come away with a solid victory against Fusion”
Meanwhile, the Western Sting upset defending champions Victoria Fury 63-47 to claim the ANL premiership title.
The Fury were aiming for their fifth straight ANL title but the Sting produced their best performance of the season to upset the competition favourites.
