Diamonds go back-to-back in Constellation Cup

The Australian Diamonds have taken a 2-1 lead in the Constellation Cup on the back of a 58-50 win over the Silver Ferns in Game Three on Friday night in Adelaide.

It was goal-for-goal early in the opening quarter before the Australians slick offence allowed them to sneak away to a two-goal lead at the first break, 15-13.

The Australian Diamonds dominated the second quarter with great hands over pressure and finding easy access to their shooters under the post to open up a 10-goal lead late in the term.

A couple of missed shots in the final minutes of the second quarter allowed the Silver Ferns to creep back within six goals at halftime, 30-24.

The Australians got back on track early in the third quarter, setting up an eight-goal lead, but the injection of Shannon Francois at WA for the Silver Ferns brought more flow to the Kiwis’ front line, bringing them back within five goals.

The Diamonds rallied again late in the quarter as the Kiwis attack faltered. With Kimberlee Green shifting to C and Madi Browne introduced at WA, the Silver Fern defenders struggled to combat their speed as the home team went on a 10-1 run to lead 47-34 at the final break.

Cathrine Latu replaced Irene van Dyk at GS for the Silver Ferns and provided some extra energy for the visitors as GK Katrina Grant threw herself at every contest as they tried to claw back the deficit.

The Australian remained calm under the desperate defence from the Silver Ferns to take the win by eight goals.

It is a quick turnaround for both teams ahead of Game Four on Monday night in Melbourne. Watch all the action LIVE on FOX SPORTS 2 and SBS 2 from 8:00pm AEST.
