The 2014 GrainCorp Inter-Regional State League brought together teams from across New South Wales, pitting the best of the best against one another to crown the Regional State League Champion.
However the weekend proved not only an opportunity for regional players to test themselves against quality opposition, but gave some of our regional umpires an opportunity to learn from the best.
Umpires from each of the Regional Finalists – Newcastle, Orange, Grafton, Tamworth and Hastings Valley – travelled to the Anne Clark Centre to officiate matches across the two days, as well as receive mentoring from National ‘A’ Badge umpires.
Netball NSW Regional Development Manager Nicole Bowles said it was great to be able to provide a development opportunity not only to regional athletes, but also umpires who in turn can pass on their knowledge to their other colleagues in white in their local area.
“We’ve been really lucky to have four [A Badged] umpires come out and give some encouragement and support, and also share their knowledge and passion for umpiring netball with the [regional] umpires throughout the weekend,” Bowles said.
“They’ve been a great [resource] of support and encouragement, and you can really see… that they’ve taken on-board what they’ve been coached and that’s come through on their games.”
NetballNSWTV also caught up with Netball NSW Umpires & Officials Development Coordinator Jan Simpson about what type of coaching the regional umpires received across the weekend – watch the full interview below;
