NSW teams looking to build on Day 1

Day 1 of the 2017 National Netball Championships ended with the NSW 17/U team still looking for their first win and the 19/U team looking to build on a winning performance in Round 2.

17/U – Day 1 wrap

The NSW 17/U team are looking for their first win today, Thursday 20 April, after going down 31-21 to Western Australia in their Round 1 game and 38-31 in their Round 2 game against Queensland.

NSW Coach Lenore Blades gave clear advice during the games, asking her team for multiple leads to the ball and urging them to contest it in defence.

In their Round 2 clash the team came out hard in the first quarter, contesting every ball and attacking with confidence, but they could not maintain their first quarter lead for the whole sixty minutes of play.

Today will see the 17/U team take on Northern Territory at 8.30am AEST, who are also looking for their first win. After that Round 3 match, NSW will then take on South Australia in their Round 4 clash at 2.30pm AEST.

19/U – Day 1 wrap

The 19/U team, led by Captain Demi Evans, are going into Day 2 with one win and one loss under their belts.

Their Round 1 game was a quintessential State-of-Origin contest with Queensland which thrilled a packed Canberra crowd. The court was peppered with Australian Netball League (ANL) players and some on the brink of Suncorp Super Netball.

NSW held a two-goal lead for most of the match, but Queensland willed themselves to a nail-biting win in the last quarter 28-27.

NSW coach Pate Cooper was disappointed with the narrow loss but overall very happy with her team’s performance, particularly the defensive effort.

“It was a very good start, I’m happy with it … I think we just didn’t capitalise on chances. We turned over enough ball, I was really happy with that all the way through. We just needed to value the ball that little bit more and finish off just those little one-percenters at the end in those last few minutes.”

Their Round 2 game saw them take on  South Australia, who had won their Round 1 clash against the Northern Territory convincingly 38-20. Coming into Round 2 after their Round 1 loss the team was ready to get the scoreboard rolling. They put on a convincing performance to win the game 30-23.

Today, the 19/U team will take on Tasmania at 1.00pm AEST in their Round 3 match, and Victoria in their Round 4 game at 7.00pm AEST.
