The 2016 Samsung State Championships are officially underway with Netball NSW President Wendy Archer AM declaring the tournament open at both Newcastle and Charlestown Netball Associations this morning, Saturday 11 June.
In what promises to be a bonanza weekend of netball action in the greater Newcastle region – both the NSW Swifts and Netball NSW Waratahs are in action later today at Newcastle Entertainment Centre – athletes, umpires, organisers and fans were delighted to be greeted with clear blue skies ahead of the 48th instalment of the Championships.
And the Championships have already had their first winners; Westlakes (Newcastle) and Tamworth (Charlestown) were both awarded the best marchers for the Parade of Districts, with many special mentions for the wonderful colour on display.
“I would like to give you all a warm welcome on such a beautiful morning,” Archer said at Newcastle.
“In this our 48th year, there are 72 Associations competing from across our wonderful state. We have 230 umpires across the Newcastle and Charlestown venues and there’s approximately 350 team officials supporting through their roles as coaches, officials and primary carers.
“Family, friends and spectators will be treated to the passion players have for the game, and that passion brings out the great skills that we are going to see on court over the next few days.
“I would like to wish everyone taking part the best of luck and I invite you all to enjoy the spectacle, feel the passion and revel in what is truly a great sporting event for women.”
The President also acknowledged valued partners, who have helped make the Championships possible.
The weekend will see 117 teams representing 72 Associations who have travelled from near and far to participate in three days of back-to-back netball action.
The 2016 tournament will see six age-divisions take part; Newcastle will host four divisions – Open Championship, 21/U Championship, 17/U Championship and Division Two – while Open Division Two and 17/U Division Three will take to the courts at Charlestown.
Netball NSW would like to thank Naming Rights Partner SAMSUNG for their support of the 2016 State Championships, as well as Major Partners The Australian College of Physical Education, The Athletes Foot, BBX, Coast2Coast and The Kids’ Cancer Project.
Best of luck to everyone involved at both venues for the 2016 SAMSUNG State Championships!
