Bankstown dreaming big for large netball numbers

Bankstown City Netball Association (BCNA) have grand plans on how to grow the popularity of netball in their community.

The 16-Club Association is based in a Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CaLD)-rich area, and as such have the opportunity to introduce netball to a brand new audience who may have never heard of the sport before.

“Bankstown City are based in a real melting pot of cultures and religions and so for us, the real challenge is overcoming a lack of netball familiarity to introduce new players to the sport,” BCNA’s Secretary Jessica Cherry claimed.

“Many youngsters haven’t heard of, let alone played, netball before or they may have experienced barriers to participation.  At Bankstown City we want to make their participation as simple as possible – we’re open-minded about adjusting things here and there so players and their families feel comfortable.

“We’re about embracing our community, and getting them involved in this fantastic sport!”

One such example was a recent Netball NSW School Holiday Clinic held at their Condell Park netball courts, with almost 50 kids – including boys – having fun with netball.

“Many of those who signed up were new to netball which is wonderful. Most importantly everyone had a lot of fun, so we’re hoping many will either sign up to their local Club, or visit us again for our Come & Try Day,” Jessica stated.

BCNA will hold their free Come & Try Day on Saturday 6 February, 2016, and have opened the invitation to all 16 of their Clubs to hold their 2016 Registrations on the same day, at the same venue.

“The reasoning behind the idea was that those who want to come and try playing netball, to see what it’s about and whether they enjoy it, can sign up on the spot should they wish too.  Plus, participants and their families can engage and chat with the Clubs, giving them unique face-to-face time,” explained Jessica.

In the meantime, Jessica says BCNA are celebrating their Twilight Competition which started three weeks ago.  Whilst they saw a modest increase in new participants – “about five percent or so” – they were forced to change their original timings due to the overwhelming number of teams registered.

“We’ve seen a really large intake of 11 and 12-year-olds in particular, and so had to adjust our original timeslots to be able to fit everyone in; it was a great problem to have! Our next mission is to engage with more NetSetGO kids, the five to 10-year-olds, and get them involved in our programs.”

For now BCNA will continue working hard in engaging their community, with Jessica wanting to remind everyone “our door is always open.”

“The BCNA Executive is incredibly passionate about growing netball in our community, more in part to see players enjoy themselves.  We’re pretty hands on in assisting our Clubs by creating easier paths for those new to our game to sign up and play.

“For anyone interested in more information or to get in touch with their local Club, feel free to contact BCNA by giving us a call or, even better, visiting us at the netball courts,” Jessica concluded.
