On Sunday 16 August 2015, the Australian Netball Diamonds were crowned World Champions in front of a world record crowd of 16,752 at Sydney’s Allphones Arena.
The Diamonds defeated their archrivals the New Zealand Silver Ferns in the Gold Medal match by 3-goals, 58-55, and in doing so won the hearts of a nation.
But it wasn’t just their dynamic performances throughout the entire tournament that won the Diamonds a legion of new fans; it was their humility, sportsmanship and team spirit, which are traits of a true champion in both sport and life.
The popularity of netball is at an all-time high in Australia, with Netball NSW experiencing increased grassroots participation numbers in 2015 and a record Membership of almost 115,000.
“Following the overwhelming success of the 2015 Netball World Cup held in Sydney, the sport is riding a wave of momentum,” expressed Netball NSW CEO Carolyn Campbell.
“Netball NSW, with the support our 800 affiliated Clubs and 118 Associations, are offering more opportunities than ever before for people of all ages to enjoy netball.”
