2012 Waratah Cup Premiers Sutherland Shire were pushed to the limit by Manly-Warringah, as the two sides went shared the lead during the first half with Manly going into half time one point ahead.  A dominant third quarter display from Maria Lynch’s chargers, Sutherland put on 17 goals to Manly’s eight.  Despite Manly winning the final quarter, Sutherland were able to post a six goal victory to stretch their winning streak to 10 games (including 2012 season*).

Illawarra led at every term in last night’s contest with Penrith, jumping out to a commanding 10 goal lead, 21-11, at the first break.  However, they had a scare as Penrith came with three goals during the second quarter, but were able to hold off and post their first win of the season, 62-53.

Eastwood Ryde put on a dominant, four quarter performance over Baulkham Hills to claim victory in their Round Six match-up, 47-38.  Eastwood led at every break with a fast-paced midcourt and moving attacking circle.  However, Baulkham Hills were not to be discounted, showing why they had remained undefeated so far this season with strong passing and patience through the court.  The difference was the combination of Eastwood’s ‘two Jessicas’ in GK Calderara and GD Mansell, whose partnership shut down the free movement of Baulkham Hills’ shooters and applied pressure to every shot.

The final match of the night saw St George claim victory over Newcastle, with a dominant first half performance setting up the southern suburbs 55-48 victory.  The shooting combination of Kimberly Borger and Emma Turner were a thorn in Newcastle defenders’ side as combined put on 17 goals in the second quarter to set up a healthy lead.  Newcastle tried to move the ball quickly down the court to close the gap on the scoreboard, but St George had the pace to match and held out a spirited Newcastle to claim victory.

In Division Two the action is white-hot, with defending champions Eastwood Ryde the only team to remain undefeated after three matches.  The 2012 Champions were able to post a commanding 29 goal victory over Blue Mountains this week, and will take on Northern Suburbs next Tuesday evening.

2012 Division Two Runners-Up Manly-Warringah sit in second place with two wins and one loss, ahead on percentage to Liverpool City, Northern Suburbs and Ku-ring-gai.  This sets up a tantalising contest in Round Four with Manly and Ku-ring-gai taking the court at 8.30pm.

Blacktown City sits atop the Division Three ladder having yet to drop a game, with a draw to Ku-ring-gai in Round One the only blemish to their perfect start.  They will meet third-placed Hawkesbury City next Monday evening, while the “Hills Shire Derby” will be contested between rival neighbours Baulkham Hills and Hills Districts at 7.00pm.

Tonight, Thursday, Division Four kicks-off with undefeated Randwick taking on Liverpool City at 7.00pm, while second-place Eastwood Ryde meet Camden & District and Sutherland Shire battle Central Coast on court.  In the games played in the second timeslot at 8.30pm, Ku-ring-gai take on Blue Mountains while fourth-placed Illawarra meet fifth-placed Manly-Warringah.
