Fave Moments of 2013 – Moira Gaha

As we quickly approach the end of another season, netballnsw.com is asking some of those in our netball community to share their favourite netball moments from 2013.

First we brought you NSW Swift Paige Hadley and her incredible debut ANZ Championship season, and today netballnsw.com catches up with 2013 Netball NSW Blues Head Coach Moira Gaha who shares some of her favourite moments from a jam-packed 12 months.

What is Moira Gaha’s favourite netball moment of 2013?

“I’ve been involved with so many different teams and netball programs this year, it’s too hard for me to pick just one! So I’ve chosen a few highlights from some different teams across the year…

Firstly, the Sydney Netball Academy (SNA) – I’ve been involved with the Academy for a few years now and it’s great to see players from different Associations across the Sydney Metropolitan area work hard together at training and in competitions, and learn with and from each other.

One memory that will stick with me from this year was the squad singing and dancing together at the first SNA dinner, celebrating a fantastic 2013 year; it’s great to see relationships develop off the court as these girls have done.  What is also wonderful to see is how many SNA athletes have made it through the various phases for 2014 NSW State Team trials.

Secondly, my DOOLEYS Waratah Cup St George team – this team has made huge in-roads after entering a rebuilding stage, and now we have a really strong group of experience and youth.  My highlight of the season was in Round 2 where, with just seven players available, we were able to defeat eventual 2013 Champions Eastwood Ryde in a nail-biter by just one goal.  The team really dug deep and this result set us up for a good season.

Thirdly, having the opportunity to be Head Coach of the 2013 Netball NSW Blues – watching this young team come together and gel so well with players from a variety of Associations.  They had an incredibly strong team bond and were competitive from start to finish.  It was a pleasure to be involved and celebrate a few good wins.

Finally, there have been a few personal achievements I’ve been really proud of.  Passing the technical and tactical component of the Netball Australia High Performance Coaching Accreditation course was great to be able to tick off the list, as well as the privilege of being a Head Coach in the Australian Netball League.

I’m really looking forward to going back to the National Netball Championships next year as Head Coach of the NSW 17U team, being competitive and hopefully bringing home the 2014 title.  Having the opportunity to step up and be Assistant Coach to Anita Keelan with the Netball NSW Waratahs during next year’s ANL season will also be a great challenge that I’m looking forward to.

However, one of the most satisfying coaching roles I undertook this year, which reminded me why we are involved in netball, is getting the young children at my primary school involved in the ANZ NetSetGO! program.  It was such a pleasure to see 30 young kids, with big smiles on their faces just enjoying simple netball skills, which is what it is all about – having fun!”
