Fave Moments of 2013 – Rowena Gibson

As we quickly approach the end of another year, netballnsw.com has been asking some of those in our netball community to share their favourite netball moments from 2013.

On the final day of 2013, netballnsw.com catches up with umpire Rowena Gibson, who netball fans would see regularly at the Anne Clark Centre on Saturdays during the DOOLEYS State League competition, giving back by mentoring her fellow officials in white.

What is Rowena Gibson’s netball moment of 2013?

“This year was such a busy year personally it’s really difficult to pick out one moment.  However there is a few that stand out to me…

After many ups and downs – injuries and balancing family – this year I finally achieved my National ‘A’ Badge.  It’s been a long time in the making however the support that I received from the netball community, especially my fellow umpires, was so uplifting.  Many people have helped and encouraged me along the way – too many for me to name – but I want to thank everyone for their support.

I also had a terrific day umpiring the 2013 Marie Little OAM Shield.  What a wonderful competition it is! It was great to umpire players who were out there giving it a go and having fun in a competitive environment.

And finally, being able to give back to my community in white by mentoring other umpires during the 2013 DOOLEYS State League competition.  I love grassroots netball and thoroughly enjoyed the Saturday mornings out at the Anne Clark Centre coaching some of our up-and-coming umpires.  I enjoy seeing them grow in their understandings of the game, and also when they get that ‘Light bulb’ moment of how to apply a technique well.

Coaching challenges your own knowledge and understanding, so while I still have my coaching ‘L’ Plates on, it’s very rewarding and an opportunity I thoroughly enjoy.”
