Finals beckon for Netball NSW Waratahs

The Netball NSW Waratahs will travel to Adelaide this weekend, coming up against the best netball talent from around the country to contest the Finals Series of the 2013 Australian Netball League (ANL).

Four teams will be vying to take home this year’s title, which will begin with the Semi Finals on Saturday 24 August at Netball SA Stadium.

After finishing the regular season undefeated in top spot, the Victorian Fury will meet hosts Southern Force.  The hosts scraped into the top four after posting big winning scores in Week 7, which saw them leap-frog the Queensland Fusion into fourth spot to have a shot at defending their 2012 title.

The NNSW Waratahs will then take the court against the other Victorian side, 2013 newcomers the Flames, at 7.00pm (local time).  The last time these two sides met was back at the beginning of the season in Week 1 with the NSW side posting a three goal victory.

Head Coach Sue Hawkins says the NNSW Waratahs are prepared for the tough contests they’ll encounter this weekend.

“We’ve got some tough games in front of us … when we played [the Victorian Flames] last time I think we were probably a little bit under done.  We have had six weeks under our belt now and this week’s training has been good, so we are ready to go,” Hawkins said.

With the winners of each Semi Final advancing to the title decider on Sunday, the NNSW Waratahs will have to overcome the Flames if they are to feature in their fourth consecutive ANL Grand Final.

Hawkins said her charges have grown exponentially since their Week 1 encounter against the Flames, but so too has the Victorian side.

“[The Flames] are a bit of an unknown team.  They’ve come into the competition [this year], they’ve got some experience as well as youth … and they fought right to the end [in Week 1],” Hawkins said.

“[However] we’ve grown and our combination have developed.  I was watching our [Week 1] game and our starting line-up is not the same as what we started with when we played them.”

The last time NSW brought home the ANL title was in 2011, so will be looking to go one better than last year after finishing Runners-Up to the Southern Force.
