Manly Warringah take out Division Four

Manly Warringah DOOLEYS Metro League division 4 winners

Manly Warringah have been crowned 2016 DOOLEYS Metro League Division 4 Champions after a thrilling one-goal win over Minor Premiers Randwick at Netball Central.

As the scoreboard suggests Manly’s 39-38 win was an extremely intense affair, which came right down to the wire in what was a stunning contest in front of a raucous crowd.

The contest started out tight, with Randwick enjoying the better of starts. But Manly weren’t to be discouraged, sticking with their opposition to set up an exciting see-sawing battle which would set the tone for the remainder of the match. With a switch in momentum Manly climbed to a handy three goal lead which they would hang onto until the first break.

It was a scrappy start to the second quarter; both sides guilty of turnovers, much in thanks to the strong defensive pressure displayed on court. That was until Manly broke the deadlock nearly two minutes in, effectively ending the tennis-like rally.

Manly looked sharp, but Randwick were up to the challenge. Soon the Minor Premiers had gained back control of play with three quick goals. But again, they couldn’t capitalise which allowed Manly to maintain their advantage into the half-time break.

The back-and-forth battle continued into the second half as the teams stepped up the intensity. Goal Shooter Isabella Ward provided a strong target for Manly in the circle, rewarding her defensive teammates efforts by pushing out their advantage on the scoreboard.

With just 15 minutes remaining players from both sides were desperate, throwing everything into the contest. With Manly enjoying the better of the contest, Randwick made their move as the game moved into the final eight minutes.

A string of goals stunned Manly as their opposition were willed on by a loud and proud Randwick crowd; eventually taking the lead much to their supporters’ applause. But again Manly showed steely nerves, setting up an exciting finish.

With just seconds remaining, Randwick got within one goal but Manly had possession – they were able to hold on to emerge victorious.
