Netball celebrating NAIDOC Week

All this week Australia is celebrating NAIDOC Week; a time to celebrate the rich culture and history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

NAIDOC – originally standing for ‘National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee’ – is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life with this week in particular providing lots of great opportunities to participate in a range of activities to show your support.

Netball NSW is getting involved in NAIDOC week by hosting a clinic this Friday 10 July at the National Centre of Indigenous Excellence (NCIE) in Redfern, featuring One Netball ambassador and community engagement extraordinaire, Mo’onia Gerrard.

The event is being run as part of NCIE’s Inner City Family & Sports Day, providing the local Indigenous community an opportunity to have fun with netball in a family friendly environment.

Along with Friday’s events, Netball NSW is also supporting our northern friends at Lismore and Ballina Netball Associations who will be holding their own respective NAIDOC Week events to celebrate this week.

All year round there are community engagement events to get involved in netball; whether it be the NetSetGO Inclusion program which encourages participation in a school-based environment for Indigenous students, to Department of Sports & Recreation Grant-funded programs for School Gala Days, plus much more.

Netball NSW has also once again thrown its support behind the Koori Games, which are being held on Thursday 23 and Friday 24 October.

Netball NSW is partnering with both Charlestown Netball Association and the Department of Sports & Recreation who will be hosting and organising this year’s event, which provides an opportunity for young Aboriginal and Torres Strait-heritage athletes to play in their favourite sports – like netball! – in a fun tournament.

Remember; NAIDOC Week is a once-a-year opportunity to get to know and enjoy the rich Indigenous history and culture that surrounds Australia, so immerse yourself this week in the NAIDOC Celebrations and have fun!
