With an opening round win under their belt, the NSW Swifts travel to New Zealand to take on defending champions Waikato/Bay of Plenty Magic this Easter Sunday aiming for back-to-back wins in the 2013 ANZ Championship.

The NSW Swifts will be looking to repeat their performance when the two teams last met in Tauranga, when the visitors defeated the home-side WBOP Magic, 53-46, in Round 9 of the 2011 ANZ Championship.

Speaking ahead of their first away match of the season, Swifts Head Coach Lisa Beehag said defeating the reigning Champions will be no easy feat.

“I think there are a few key things we have to look at; obviously they have two great defenders (Casey Kopua and Leana de Bruin), (Laura) Langman through the midcourt and of course Irene van Dyk at the front … but in saying that we aren’t going to forget about the three other players on court,” said Beehag.

“The key will be for us to build pressure through the midcourt both defensively and in attack to give our ends the best opportunity … the Kiwi style of play is different to Aussie teams – there is more of a defensive zone rather than tight man-on, so it’s about preparing for that change.”

“The team has taken a lot of confidence from our win against West Coast Fever. Our opening quarter was one of the best I have ever seen and we were also able to give ten players court-time.”

“History shows our games against WBOP Magic are always exciting and usually quite close, and the NSW Swifts are looking forward to the challenge of playing the defending champs in front of their home crowd,” Beehag concluded.

The Swifts lead the head-to-head with six wins and two losses over WBOP Magic in the ANZ Championship, including a nail-biting two goal victory in their last on-court battle in 2012*.
