And the title of State Champions isn’t the only trophy up for grabs with the Pat Weston OAM Country Champions Cup also on the line. Introduced in 2009, the Cup is named in honour of Netball NSW and Parramatta Auburn Life Member Pat Weston OAM, and is awarded to the highest placed regional Association (outside Sydney Metro) in the Open Championship division.

“It’s always an exciting time for the netball community when the State Championships roll around,” Netball NSW President Wendy Archer, said.

“It’s one of our iconic events on the calendar, and this year I’m proud to announce 118 teams representing 72 Associations across the State will participate in three days of back-to-back exciting netball.

“It is an exciting time for netball in the greater Newcastle area this weekend. Not only is it hosting the State Championships, but the NSW Swifts and Netball NSW Waratahs will also be taking the court at Newcastle Entertainment Centre for their respective ANZ Championship and Australian Netball League fixtures on Saturday afternoon, 11 June. It’s a netball bonanza in Newcastle!

“Our sincere thanks are extended to Samsung for their support of the 2016 State Championships, as well as Major Partners The Australian College of Physical Education, The Athletes Foot, BBX, Coast2Coast and The Kids’ Cancer Project.

“I’d also like to thank the many hundreds of volunteers who have helped in the lead up to the event; and who will continue to do so across the weekend, and wish all the athletes, umpires and support staff taking part the best of luck.”
