Waratahs secure first win for 2017

The Netball NSW Waratahs defeated the Canberra GIANTS 58-50 in Round 1 of the Australian Netball League (ANL) at the Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre on Saturday, 18 February.

The ANL is where some of the country’s top talent cut their teeth and the competition acts as a bridge between State League competitions and Suncorp Super Netball.

It was a confident return to the courts for the New South Wales team who kept the pressure on after strong first half performance which was the catalyst for the win.

Head coach Brioney Akle said she was extremely happy with the way her side performed.

“I was really happy with the way the team performed today, they stuck to the game plan and they were really impressive,” she said.

“Considering we haven’t had much time training and playing together I thought the team was outstanding and they just came together very well.”

The GIANTS began to show some momentum after changing their line-up for the second half, but Akle said she was happy with the way her side reacted to the changes.

“When GIANTS made changes I just thought we did an exceptional job, we played seamlessly and stuck to our game,” she said.

“Everyone just played so well tonight and I am hoping we will be able to see something similar tomorrow.”

The Waratahs will face the Canberra GIANTS again tomorrow at 12pm at the Genea Netball Centre, Sydney Olympic Park. CLICK HERE to get your tickets.
