Wilson to miss remainder of ANL season

Netball NSW has today confirmed NSW Swift Micaela Wilson will miss the remainder of the 2015 Australian Netball League (ANL) season following medical advice.

The 22-year-old defender has been withdrawn from the Netball NSW (NNSW) Waratahs after suffering a setback with an ankle injury sustained prior to Round 13 of the 2015 ANZ Championship.

Netball NSW General Manager – High Performance Rob Drinkwater said Wilson’s withdrawal was also partly due to the shortened 2015 season.

“At the end of the day player welfare is most important.  Unfortunately Micaela hasn’t been able to fully recover from her injury, and therefore it’s been decided to withdraw her from the remaining four weeks of competition,” Drinkwater said.

“Our medical staff confirmed she would be out of action for the next two weeks at minimum, and with such a shortened ANL season this year, it would mean Micaela wouldn’t be eligible to contest the Finals Series.

“Obviously both Micaela and Netball NSW are disappointed she won’t be representing the Waratah this year, but we wish her all the best for a speedy recovery,” Drinkwater concluded.

An announcement on who will be Wilson’s permanent replacement in the NNSW Waratahs will be made in due course.

The ANL gives players a fantastic opportunity to test their skills in a competition that bridges the gap between State League competitions and the ANZ Championship, whilst providing fans around the country a chance to see some of our best young talent in action.

Beginning alongside the ANZ Championship in 2008, the under-pinning league is a vital competition to Netball Australia’s national pathway, not only providing players with an opportunity to develop but also coaches, umpires and officials.

NSW has claimed just one ANL title, in 2011, when a Rob Wright-led NNSW Waratahs became the first ANL side to go through a season undefeated; on three other occasions the NNSW Waratahs have finished Runners-Up (2010, 2012, 2013).

Five NSW athletes have been named Tournament MVP since the inaugural season – Narelle Easther (NNSW Blues, 2008), Amorette Wild (NNSW Waratahs, 2011), Kristy Guthrie (NNSW Waratahs, 2012), and joint recipients Ashleigh Brazill (Western Sting) and Kristina Brice (NNSW Waratahs) in 2014.
