At the 2014 State Dinner, Netball NSW acknowledged and celebrated four Members of its netballing community for their long-term contribution to the sport with the awarding of the prestigious Anne Clark BEM Service Award.
Marilyn Latham (Eastwood Ryde), Annette Rowe (Baulkham Hills), Betty Spillane (Inner Western Suburbs) and Margaret West (Charlestown) where bestowed this honour on the evening of Saturday 1 November at the annual Netball NSW State Dinner held in the Grand Ballroom at Allphones Arena, Sydney Olympic Park.
The Anne Clark Service award is awarded to an individual in recognition of their significant contribution to the development of netball at an Association level and has given at least ten (10) years outstanding service to netball.
Marilyn Latham – Eastwood Ryde Netball Association
Marilyn has been involved with Eastwood Ryde Netball Association and worked tirelessly, volunteering for almost four decades.
She is a dedicated coach and has been coaching junior and seniors teams at both Club and Association level since 1979. From 1995 until 2010, Marilyn coached a number of Eastwood Ryde’s State Age and State Championship teams.
Marilyn has been on the Association’s Coaching Committee since 1998. The Coaching Coordinator, since 2006, runs coaching courses every year for club coaches, and continues to mentor all Eastwood Ryde Netball Association representative coaches.
In addition to these coaching duties, Marilyn has run the Association’s NetSetGO program since 2006. In 2004, Marilyn was awarded Eastwood Ryde Netball Association Life Membership.
Annette Rowe – Baulkham Hills Shire Netball Association
Annette has been involved with netball within the Baulkham Hills Shire Netball Association for over three decades.
As a founding Member of Model Farms Netball Club in 1979, this long-time player, coach and umpire, has held numerous positions including Umpires Convenor and Coaching Co-ordinator, sat on the Grading Committee, and was Club President for a combined total of 22 years.
At an Association level, Annette has contributed enormously over the past 33 years; whether as Representative Convenor, Junior Vice President, Coaching Convenor or sitting on both the Junior Selection Panel and Senior Grading Committee.
Annette has also coached Junior Representative Teams for Baulkham Hills Shire Netball Association, winning four titles and eight runner-up patches.
In 1988, Annette was awarded Baulkham Hills Shire Netball Association Life Membership.
Betty Spillane – Inner Western Suburbs Netball Association
Betty has been a long standing Member of both the Ashbury Netball Club and Inner Western Suburbs Netball Association for over four decades.
During her 35 years with Ashbury Netball Club, Betty has coached many junior and senior teams, at a minimum of 3-4 teams each winter season, and having attained her National C Badge in 1979, continues to umpire and mentor others.
As a Club administrator, Betty works tirelessly on fundraising endeavours, held the position of Treasurer for ten years, and is the Club’s current Coaching Coordinator.
At an Association level, Betty’s first position was as Secretary in 1976, before becoming Inner Western Suburbs Netball Association’s longest serving President from 1977-1993. During her time as President, Betty oversaw the growth of the Association, including the addition of hard courts with lighting and the expansion of the Association Building. Other positions Betty has held include Representative Selector and Representative Coach, plus she has sat on Grading and Tournament Committees.
Margaret West – Charlestown Netball Association
Margaret has been involved with Charlestown Netball Association for almost forty years.
Elected to the Committee in 1976, Margaret’s first position was the Senior Point Score Recorder in 1977, before becoming Assistant Treasurer, Representative Co-ordinator, Treasurer, and Registrar, an appointment she still holds today.
In addition to her tireless work for the Charlestown Netball Association, Margaret dedicated 20 years to Hillsborough Netball Club from 1974-1992, where she was made a Life Member in 1987.
In addition to numerous Sports Administration Courses she has completed, Margaret achieved her St Johns Ambulance First Aid and Level 1 Sports Training Certificates so she can further assist the Association at carnivals and State titles. For her unwavering contribution, Margaret was made a Life Member of Charlestown Netball Association in 1997.
