On Saturday evening, 14 November, at the 2015 Netball NSW State Dinner the netball community welcomed its first Legend with Anne Sargeant OAM being elevated to Legendary status in the Netball NSW Hall of Fame.
An accolade which has been introduced this year, Anne’s illustrious netball career which resulted in her being an icon of the sport has also earned her the prestigious title of inaugural Legend; a title she admitted to those in attendance at The Sydney Boulevard Hotel she wished to share with many.
NetballNSWTV was there to capture the at times, hilarious exchange between Anne and her former co-commentator, Master of Ceremonies Steve Robilliard. In a candid moment on stage, the long-time Australian and NSW representative admitted it was hard work and determination which took her to the heights of her career.
“I took a long while to crack the NSW Opens side… there’s always something that people don’t see that tests a little about your mettle, about how much you want something. And when I stopped crying, my parents at the time said ‘you know if you love it, then get back out to the goal post and keep going’, and so you do,” Anne admitted.
“For me [the beginning] was wearing the box pleat for Forrest Netball [Club] with my tassel and my black shoes that was the highlight. Then it was a Manly badge; trying to get into that Manly First Grade team… I just wanted one of those, I wasn’t even aware of the Australian team.
“Eventually I clued in that I would really love one of those Waratahs. So it was a gradual process, not realising at the time where things were going.”
History shows exactly where things went…
Anne represented Australia for 11 years, which included three Netball World Cups (and two Gold Medals) and Captaining the side from 1983-1989; 10 years representing the Waratah including four Australian National Netball Championships with the NSW Opens side and six years as Captain from 1982-1988; awarded Sydney’s Best Netball Player ever in 2003; earned an Order of Australia Medal for her service to netball in 1988, and elevated to Legend Status in both the Australian Sporting Hall of Fame and NSW Hall of Champions.
