Coaches get rare insight with Diamonds gem

While the NSW Swifts were out on court against the Northern Mystics, a group of NSW netball coaches were given rare access to the happenings behind the match with the first of two Netball NSW Insiders Series workshops.

Twenty coaches, from Foundation to High Performance Accreditation, gathered at Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre to take the opportunity for unrivalled access into the inner-workings of a team before an elite match.

Facilitated by Australian 21/U and Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) Assistant Coach Anita Keelan, the participants were taken through a number of game-day rituals for High Performance coaches; from the importance of knowing the opposition inside-out and devising a game plan, to creating goals for individuals, defensive/midcourt/offensive areas, and the entire team.

Participants were also given the rare opportunity to pick the brain of Australian Diamonds head coach Lisa Alexander, who attended the workshop as a special guest.  Alexander took a stab at predicting both teams’ starting line-ups (and only had one mistake!) and also workshopped with participants about what they could expect from the match.

After watching the game together the stands, the group reconvened back into a private room to analyse the match that had just been played.  NSW Swifts Assistant Coach Rob Wright spent 20 minutes with the group discussing the game plan, how the team adapted to positional changes, the on court environment, and took questions from the group.

Netball NSW Coach Development Officer Dianne Brown said it was a real treat to have Alexander address the group of coaches with such wide-variety of experience.

“Lisa was a gem! The commitment from Lisa to the Insiders Series was fantastic; she was originally scheduled for only 30 minutes, but stayed for more than an hour and half altogether.  Her willingness to share her knowledge, expertise and time to all levels of coaches was appreciated by everyone – so a big thank you to Lisa!” Brown said.

“Of course I have to extend my thanks to Anita for helping facilitate the workshop, to Rob Wright for giving us time after the game and providing footage to use, and to all the participants who joined us and were so enthusiastic in the workshop. It was a fantastic day!”

A second Insider Series is being held this weekend for the NSW Swifts v Adelaide Thunderbirds Blockbuster clash at Allphones Arena.  The workshop will be facilitated by High Performance Coach and IFNA member Sue Hawkins, with special guest appearance from Swifts Head Coach Lisa Beehag.

Registrations are still open for coaches to receive an unparalleled game-day access to one of the biggest fixtures of the 2013 ANZ Championship!
