The netball action is heating up in the Far North Coast with coaches getting visits from Academy Head Coaches, Regional State League beginning over the weekend, and the region’s first Schools Cup Local Day of 2014 this week in Grafton.
Schools Cup Local Day
Netball NSW’s first school-targeted competition, Schools Cup, is back for a second season with the Far North Coast events kick-starting this Thursday 1 May with its first Local Day being held at Grafton.
Two teams from South Grafton Public School will be joined by Iluka Public and Gillwinga Public Schools to contest the Local Day, looking to advance to the Regional Final being held on Wednesday 30 July in Casino.
Far North Coast’s Casino West Public School were crowned the inaugural Schools Cup State Champions in 2013 and will hold their Local Day in Casino, along with Brunswick Byron, towards the end of the month.
Proudly supported by our Official Charity Partner The Kids’ Cancer Project in 2014, the Netball NSW Schools Cup is an initiative by Netball NSW to provide NSW primary and secondary school students in Years Five, Six, Seven and Eight with the opportunity to enjoy netball in a fun and safe environment.
School teams compete in round robin carnivals in their local area called ‘Local Days’ from March – August, with overall winners from each Local Day progressing to a Schools Cup ‘Regional Final’.
Victorious teams from Regional Finals will advance to the Netball NSW Schools Cup State Final, to be held at the home of Netball NSW on Tuesday 16 September, 2014.
So get down to Westward Park Netball Courts in Grafton and cheer on the students for the opening day of the 2014 Netball NSW Schools Cup in the Far North Coast this Thursday!

Coach on Court Session
Brunswick Byron Netball Association received a grant from Netball NSW to run a ‘Coach on Court’ session for local Club and Association coaches to receive hands-on training from North Coast Academy of Sport Head Coach Chris Sironen.
Held on Saturday 19 April at Mullumbimby Recreation Grounds, grassroots coaches from Brunswick Byron and neighbouring Associations were taken through footwork and ball work skills sessions throughout the morning, before moving onto attacking and defensive skills in the afternoon.
Local representative and North Coast Academy players were used in the practical sessions, with coaches able to work in real-time training sessions.
FNC Regional State League
Defending champions Grafton and Ballina sit atop the ladder undefeated after the first five rounds at Yamba Sports Complex, setting up an exciting contest in Day Two of the competition. They’re closely followed by Lower Clarence, as well as young teams Casino and Brunswick Byron.
The Far North Coast Regional State League competition is an exciting development opportunity for Casino and Brunswick Byron, providing competition for the young athletes in both their sides .
The competition allows their young talent the chance to be exposed to more senior netball, gaining experience as they prepare for State Age and State Championships later this year.
Competition continues on Sunday 18 May, with Netball NSW Hall of Fame Member Marg Corbett OAM travelling to Yamba to provide real-time mentoring for coaches. At the end of the round robin, the top two sides will contest the Grand Final at 2pm to determine the 2014 Champion who will be invited to participate in the 2014 Inter-Regional State League competition in Sydney.
