Oceania Cup is a fun community festival of netball to celebrate Polynesian, Pacific and Indigenous cultures, and 2018 will be no exception.
This year’s festival will be held on Friday 16 and Saturday 17 March at Liverpool City Netball Association, with registrations NOW OPEN for teams interested in joining in the fun.
There are four age divisions on offer: 12U Mixed, 15U Ladies and Opens Ladies will play on the Saturday, with an Open Mixed Fast5 competition starting off the weekend on the Friday night!
But it’s not all about netball; the Oceania Cup is a family affair with lots of activities on offer. Come down and enjoy face painting, kids’ activities, music, food and netball skill sessions. There will also be a range of cultural performances as well as special guests making their way around the courts.
An initiative first championed by netball legend Mo’onia Gerrard, Manu’a – who is of Samoan descent – has continued to fly the torch as a passionate advocate for the Pacific island community, and is hoping to see as many people down at her junior netball courts for the festival.
“I’m really excited for Oceania Cup this year. Netball NSW always does a great job putting on the event, and I have no doubt 2018 will be lots of fun,” Manu’a said.
“The great thing about Oceania Cup is that it is a social and fun competition open to all abilities; anyone can come and join in! It’s a big family affair with teams made up of relatives and close friends, and everyone has a smile on their face. I’ve already got plenty of my family members signed up and psyched for the event.
“However, the timing of this year’s Cup is perfect to be used as a pre-season warm-up for Club and Association teams. Not only can you practice some of your game plans or get in some extra fitness work, you’ll be doing it while having heaps of fun – it’s a win/win!”
Manu’a also played tribute to founding Ambassador Gerrard, describing the Australian representative as a personal mentor.
“Mo’onia is not only a strong role model for the Pacific Island community, but she’s someone I’ve long looked up to. She’s been one of my biggest supporters and helped me a lot during my younger days, and I’m incredibly proud to be continuing her great work with Oceania Cup.”
