DOOLEYS Metro League Grand Final week continues tonight with Divisions 5 and 6 taking to the Show Court at Genea Netball Centre.
Kicking things off at 6.45pm will be Hills District and Liverpool City vying for the Division 6 title, followed by Illawarra District and Hawkesbury City going head-to-head to be crowned Division 5 Champions from 8.30pm.
It will be the first time this Finals series that both opponents will meet each other, with Liverpool and Hawkesbury coming from third place to feature in the Grand Final. See how they match up below, and make sure you’re courtside to cheer them on tonight! SECURE YOUR SEATS HERE.
GRAND FINAL: Illawarra District v Hawkesbury City, 8.30pm TUE 12 SEP
Nothing separated these two sides at the end of the regular season with Illawarra finishing in second spot by goal percentage. And the same can be said for their previous meetings, with both claiming a win over the other by the same margin – six goals.
However something clearly in favour of Hawkesbury City is winning momentum. While Illawarra finished with the greater percentage (by less than half a point), Hawkesbury have stormed into the title decider off the back of an incredible 11 consecutive wins; including their last fixture against their Grand Final opponents (Round 16).
Illawarra earned the week off though after defeating Minor Premiers Inner Western Suburbs in the Major Semi Final, who eventually bowed out of the Finals race last week against Hawkesbury.
But really we’re splitting hairs here. Based on previous performance, attacking and defensive records, and current form, both of them could be standing on the winner’s podium at the end of the 60 minutes…or will it go into Extra Time?
Major Semi Final: Illawarra District 49 d Inner Western Suburbs 46
Minor Semi Final: Hawkesbury City 50 d Penrith District 28
Preliminary Final: Hawkesbury City 43 d Inner Western Suburbs 38
Grand Final: Illawarra District v Hawkesbury City | 8.30pm, Tuesday 12 September
GRAND FINAL: Hills District v Liverpool City, 6.45pm TUE 12 SEP
Again it’s a case of second v third with Liverpool City surviving two weeks of sudden-death finals netball to meet Hills District in tonight’s title decider.
It’s also similar in that the last loss Hills District suffered was to their Grand Final opponents, if only by the slimmest of margins – Liverpool claiming a 42-41 victory in Round 14.
Both teams have proven to be power sides so far this season, with Hills the best attacking side (average of 56.7 goals per game) followed by Liverpool (52.4 goals per game). While Minor Premiers Camden & District were by far the best defensive team in the Division (letting in an average of 33 goals per game), little separates Hills and Liverpool with 40.9 goals and 42.5 goals, respectively.
Therefore defence will play a big part in tonight’s showdown with the team able to better counter their opponent’s influence on the scoreboard putting them in a great position to be crowned 2017 Champions.
Major Semi Final: Hills District 51 d Camden & District 42
Minor Semi Final: Liverpool City 62 d Campbelltown 55
Preliminary Final: Liverpool City 50 d Camden & District 48
