Metro League season wraps up tonight

The DOOLEYS Metro League wraps up for another season tonight, Thursday 14 September, with the top two Divisions crowning their 2017 Champions at Genea Netball Centre.

First up will see the Division 2 Major Semi Final rematch with Hills District surviving a sudden-death Preliminary Final to have a show at revenge against Randwick, who took out the chocolates two weeks ago by 10 goals.

This will be followed by a hotly-anticipated Division 1 contest between Minor Premiers Hunter United and Eastwood Ryde. Hunter are considered clear favourites having taken the competition by storm this year; but underestimate an underdog at your peril, with Eastwood proving they can run with the best so far in 2017.

GRAND FINAL: Hunter United v Eastwood Ryde, 8.30pm THU 14 SEP

Hunter United gave their opponents a clear warning when they defeated Baulkham Hills Shire by 31 goals in the Major Semi Final – they had their sights on the Premiership title, and those who stand in their way did so at their own peril.

But that won’t be fazing Eastwood Ryde who have survived back-to-back weeks of sudden-death finals netball to have the opportunity to tackle the Minor Premiers. While previous results can give armchair critics (like us!) the opportunity to predict what might happen, something has to be said about your season being on the line and rising to the occasion – and Eastwood will be looking to step up again tonight against Hunter.

Speaking of, Hunter have deservedly won the title of tonight’s favourite thanks to their impeccable form so far this year. Taking an incredible 12 game winning streak into the title decider, what makes their achievement even more amazing is they have done so with an average winning margin of 22.1 goals.

Eastwood – who take a four-game streak into tonight’s showdown – are also the third best defensive side in the Division, so will need to ensure they’re on-song tonight to steady Hunter’s influence on the game.

GRAND FINAL: Randwick v Hills District, 7.00pm THU 14 SEP

It’s a case of history repeating as Semi Final opponents Randwick and Hills District have another crack at each other tonight, this time for the big dance. While Hills were the ones who finished atop the ladder to claim the Minor Premiership, it was Randwick who finished atop in their Semi Final to earn a week’s rest before the Grand Final.

Hills, on the other hand, had to survive a tough hit-out against Blue Mountains in last week’s Preliminary Final; posting a 57-48 victory to secure up the rematch…very nearly the exact same score as their losing Semi Final bout.

Coincidentally, Hills last two losses have come at the hands of Randwick. But Randwick’s last defeat was to Blue Mountains, who the Hills successfully defeated to secure a Grand Final berth. Hills and Randwick’s two previous meetings in the regular season were also split at a win each; Randwick by four goals, while Hills’ notched up double digits in Round 2.

You see the bows we’re trying to string together? Good.

So will a week’s rest prove the difference? Or is there something to be said about winning momentum? Tonight we find out.
