Bankstown City advances to the DOOLEYS State League Division 7 Grand Final thanks to a commanding 59-40 win over Inner Western Suburbs in tonight’s Preliminary Final at Netball Central.
It was goal for goal til the seventh centre pass in the Preliminary Final on Tuesday night between second-placed Inner Western Suburbs and third-placed Bankstown City. A number of defensive rebounds worked in Bankstown’s favour, building their momentum and eventually leading to them scoring seven consecutive goals. IWSNA had a few attempts at goal but to no avail due to extraordinary defensive pressure by Bankstown defence. It didn’t take long for IWSNA to close the gap however, scoring the next three goals. IWSNA defensive rebounds enabled greater opportunities for the side to level the playing field, but continued offensive strength from Bankstown closed the quarter with a five-goal lead 11-16.
IWSNA started off with a strong second quarter, quickly bringing the gap to only two goals in the first three minutes. But a determined BCNA enabled a smooth transition of the ball down court and the conversion of the next five goals. A few missed goals by both teams sent the ball back and forth before Bankstown converted their 24th goal of the game, taking them to an eight-goal advantage half way through the quarter (24-16) and from there they could not be stopped, a strong defensive effort pushing the lead out to 10 goals, 31-21, at halftime.
IWSNA had another strong start in the third quarter, scoring the first goal and forcing a number of deflections in the first two minutes. IWSNA intercepts led to the conversion of their next four goals, with Bankstown only scoring one in the same time. A defensive rebound imbued Bankstown with the confidence they needed to take the ball down court. The closest quarter of the match was an unrivalled exemplar of netball, with both teams relying on full court defence to turn the ball over. A spectacular defensive rebound converted by IWSNA allowed them to close within 12 goals, 41-29, with one quarter remaining.
With only 15 minutes left to try and steal a spot in the Grand Final, IWSNA took to anther strong start to gain most of the possession in the opening minutes of the final quarter. But a determined BCNA outfit continued to stick to their offensive strengths and quickly rattled off eight goals in seven minutes. A defensive intercept by IWSNA gave the side the momentum they needed to take their next three goals but the result was already beyond doubt, BCNA booking their place in the decider by 19 goals.
Bankstown City will proceed to the Division 7 Grand Final where they will be faced with minor premiers, the Central Coast on the 21st July.
