Blue Mountains are through to the Division 4 DOOLEYS State League Grand Final after a commanding 49-33 win over City of Sydney/Sydney Uni in the Major Semi Final tonight (Thursday 9 July) at Netball Central. CSNA/Sydney Uni will meet Campbelltown in the Preliminary Final after they outlasted Illawarra 43-29 in the Minor Semi Final.
Major Semi Final: Blue Mountains 49 def CSNA/Sydney Uni 33
It was City of Sydney/Sydney Uni that got the jump-start in the Major Semi Final, escaping to a 4-1 lead before Blue Mountains clicked into gear helped by some handy defensive gains to forge a six-goal advantage at the first break, 16-10.
In the second quarter the momentum was mostly with Blue Mountains. The Minor Premiers were forced to play with patience in their goal third but it paid off, adding 11 goals to their tally in the period. CSNA/Sydney Uni were finding it tougher to get the ball to their shooters and were only able to post six goals in the term to trail by 11 at halftime, 27-16.
There was little CSNA/Sydney Uni were able to do to stop Blue Mountains in the third quarter as they ran away to set up a match-winning 19-goal lead at the final break, 40-21.
CSNA/Sydney Uni had their most productive quarter in the fourth, outscoring Blue Mountains 12-9 but the result was already beyond doubt, Blue Mountains securing their place in the decider with CSNA/Sydney Uni relegated to the Preliminary Final for a second chance at making the Grand Final.
Minor Semi Final: Campbelltown 43 def Illawarra 29
Campbelltown steadied first in the Minor Semi Final, off to a great start leading 5-1 early on. Illawarra were playing tight defence in the Campbelltown shooting circle but the red and black were able to keep adding to their tally despite Illawarra starting to settle into the game. Campbelltown led 12-7 at the first break.
Campbelltown broke away to lead by eight goals midway through the second quarter. It did not last long however with Illawarra rallying to get back within three goals, 15-18. But the Illawarra attack stalled in the final minutes of the quarter, with the Campbelltown wing defence picking up two intercepts in the the closing stages to put her team’s lead back out to five goals at halftime, 20-15.
The third quarter mirrored much of the second with Illawarra storming back to get within two goals before Campbelltown stepped up once again, getting some crucial offensive rebounds and outscoring Illawarra 7-1 in the final minutes of the period to push their lead out once again, holding a eight-goal advantage at the final break, 33-25.
After letting Illawarra back within touch in the second and third quarters, Campbelltown took no chances in the final quarter, closing out Illawarra to keep them to just four goals in the term. 10 goals in the fourth was enough to seal Campbelltown’s place in the Preliminary Final.
The Division Four Preliminary Final will be played next Thursday 16 July at Netball Central from 7:00pm.
