Hills District (HDNA) will advance to the 2015 DOOLEYS State League Division 3 Grand Final after finishing with a comfortable 57-41 win over St George (StGNA). Leading at every break, HDNA really only pulled away in the second half after StGNA put up a great contest in the opening 30 minutes.
Nothing could separate the two sides as they were locked in a see-sawing battle of trading goals early. StGNA were able to get an early edge with thanks to their full-court defensive effort, however some loose possession in their front-ended let HDNA into the contest.
Taking their opportunity with both hands HDNA charged out to a commanding lead, getting out to as much as eight goals in front of their opposition. StGNA wouldn’t be discouraged, fighting back to get within a few goals; but they couldn’t sustain it, with HDNA getting out to a seven-goal advantage at the first break.
The second quarter delivered much the same as HDNA couldn’t shake StGNA, but their opponents couldn’t make any in-roads on the deficit.
After switching their shooting combinations late in the quarter, StGNA looked to gain some momentum. But HDNA’s shooters were also on-song; their accuracy a feature meaning any high balls that were taken in the circle were converted.
The result saw HDNA maintain their seven-goal buffer at the half-time break.
The third quarter was of the sameness, however desperate play began to creep into both team’s game which gifted defenders at each end some spectacular intercepts. HDNA looked to settle first (although not immune to their own possession losses) and soon had extended on their lead.
But some slick shooting, including long-range bombs from the Goal Attack, kept StGNA in the hunt. Time wasn’t on the side for the Reds though, with the whistle signalling three-quarter time ending their purple patch.
With their eyes on a Grand Final berth, HDNA didn’t let up their strong pressure – controlling the run of play to finish out the match strongly. StGNA did their best to stay in touch with some sharp shooting from their Goal Shooter, but in the end the effort wasn’t enough.
After finishing 16-goal victors HDNA will now meet Minor Premiers Eastwood Ryde in the 2015 title decider next Thursday 23 July at Netball Central.
