The DOOLEYS Metro League Preliminary Finals concluded at Netball Central last night, Thursday 1 September, with teams from Divisions 1 and 2 facing off for the right to play in next week’s Grand Finals.
Here’s how last night’s action panned out:
Ku-ring-gai 52 d St George 44
Ku-ring-gai have booked their place in the 2016 DOOLEYS Metro League Division 1 Grand Final after defeating St George by eight goals in last night’s penultimate final.
They will now go on to face Eastwood Ryde in next week’s decider on Thursday 8 September at Netball Central (8:30pm AEST).
A strong second-half performance was the key for the victors after the teams played out a tight opening 30 minutes of netball.
The sides were locked at nine goals apiece after the opening 15 minutes, and again at halftime (12-all) before Ku-ring-gai won the third quarter by five goals to put themselves in the driving seat in the race for a Grand Final spot.
Credit to St George who continued to take the contest to their opponents, but the couldn’t catch Ku-ring-gai as they went on to finish 52-44 victors.

Illawarra District 43 d Randwick 37
Illawarra District have set up a Semi Final re-match after overcoming a spirited Randwick side by six goals in last night’s Preliminary Final, thanks to a more accurate shooting percentage.
They will now face Hunter United in next week’s decider at Netball Central on Thursday 8 September (6:45pm AEST).
Illawarra enjoying a dominant start to proceedings, winning the opening quarter 13 goals to nine; but were met with a rejuvenated Randwick outfit in the second period.
Facing a five goal deficit at the big break, Randwick tried to maintain their strong second quarter game but Illawarra had different plans. Replicating their opening quarter form, the eventual Grand Finalists were able to further extend their lead to eight goals as the match headed into the final quarter.
But credit to Randwick who weren’t to be deterred, finishing strongly to outscore their opponents nine goals to seven in the final term. But it wasn’t enough to catch Illawarra, who finished 43-37 victors at the end of 60 minutes.
