Sutherland advances to division four decider

Sutherland Shire advanced directly to the 2013 DOOLEYS State League Division Four Grand Final with a 44-38 win over minor premiers Illawarra in Thursday night’s Major Semi Final.

In the night’s earlier match, Eastwood Ryde won their place in the Preliminary Final against Illawarra, defeating Ku-ring-gai 40-27 in the Minor Semi Final.

The Minor Semi Final was a see-sawing affair as first Ku-ring-gai then Eastwood Ryde wrenched control.

Despite possession changing hands a number of times in the opening minutes, it was Ku-ring-gai who were able to convert their opportunities, scoring the opening seven goals of the match.

Eastwood Ryde got on the board midway through the quarter and rattled off five consecutive goals to get back in touch and trail by four at the first break, 10-6.

Eastwood Ryde went on their own 7-0 run midway through the second quarter as their defensive efforts started to pay dividends, going ahead to lead by two goals at halftime, 18-16.

The first five goals of the third quarter went to Eastwood Ryde as they carried the momentum, but it was a tough battle on court with Ku-ring-gai staying in touch to trail by just six goals at the final break, 28-22.

A solid defensive effort saw Eastwood Ryde hold off Ku-ring-gai to secure the 13-goal victory and a place in the Preliminary Final.

It was goal-for-goal in the opening minutes of the Major Semi Final between Illawarra and Sutherland Shire; a 10-1 run from Sutherland to close the first quarter handed them a 15-8 lead.

Illawarra were first on the board in the second quarter, and the teams continued to trade goals, Sutherland’s lead stretching by just three at halftime to 27-17.

Illawarra made a charge in the third quarter with their shooters converting long shots, winning the period 11-9 to reduce the margin to eight goals at the final break, 36-28.

The fourth quarter was an enthralling affair with neither team willing to give an inch. Players stood up to the full court pressure as Illawarra inched closer but Sutherland held off the charge to win by six and advance to the decider.
