Adelaide’s Hannah Petty has been named Captain of the Australian Netball World Youth Cup team with Alice Teague-Neeld and Kate Eddy named as Vice Captains at the State Netball Centre in Perth on Monday night.
The announcement was made at an event celebrating 50 years since the 1967 World Cup in Perth, with some of those players on hand to help present the dresses to the new batch of Australian representatives.
Petty spoke of the privilege of leading her team as they represent Australia over the next two weeks.
“It’s a great honour to firstly be named in the team, so being named Captain is amazing and something I’m really excited about,” said Petty.
“As a leadership group, we’ve worked really well so far. We see ourselves as leading from the front, living by our behaviors and really driving that through the rest of the girls.”
Head coach Tania Obst praised Petty for her appointment as Captain.
“Hannah is very worthy captain for our Netball World Youth Cup team having exhibited the behaviours that we have put together in our group,” said Obst.
“She also presents very well with what we’re trying to put out there on the court so I’m really looking forward to her leading us in Botswana.
“Since being told of their appointments, the leadership group has really been engaging the rest of the group to ensure that when we got here in Perth, we weren’t starting from scratch, we were well and truly down the track of where we wanted to be.”
Joining the team in Botswana will be Netball Australia CEO Marne Fechner and Netball Australia’s High Performance Manager Stacey West.
The 21/U representative side have been training in Perth before they head to Gaborone, Botswana on Wednesday.
