Netball Australia has this morning announced the athletes selected for the Australian Diamonds’ 2016/17 International Series, which includes six Netball NSW representatives in the 18-player squad.
April Brandley (nee Letton), Paige Hadley, Kristiana Manu’a, Susan Pettitt, Kim Ravaillion and Gabi Simpson have all been included in the squad from which the Diamonds’ team will be selected for the upcoming International Series contests – the 2016 Netball Quad Series, the 2016 Constellation Cup, and the 2017 Northern Hemisphere Tour.
Hadley and Pettitt’s NSW Swifts teammates Sharni Layton, Caitlin Thwaites and Stephanie Wood have also been included in the squad announcement.
Netball Australia has confirmed Brandley, Layton (also acting as co-Vice-Captain), Manu’a, Ravaillion, Simpson, Thwaites and Wood will don the Green & Gold for the 2016 Netball Quad Series in which the Diamonds will play the New Zealand Silver Ferns, England Roses and South African Proteas, starting Saturday 27 August in Auckland, NZ.
It is both Manu’a and Wood’s debut international selections after both athletes were included as Diamonds training partners for the Aussies’ Tour of England in January this year.
“Last weekend’s ANZ Championship Grand Final demonstrated that our athletes play with fortitude and dogged determination,” Diamonds Head Coach Lisa Alexander said.
“Our Quad Series team features a mixture of exciting young talent and more experienced Diamonds, who will be ready for strong contests against England, New Zealand and South Africa.”
Alexander and National Selectors Anne Sargeant – Netball NSW’s inaugural Hall of Legends recipient – and Michelle Wilkins will name the Australian team for the upcoming Constellation Cup next month.
“All 18 players selected in the squad have performed with excellence this year,” Alexander added.
“With less than two years until the Commonwealth Games, our priority is managing athlete wellbeing and building our squad, ensuring those who need a break are rested, and those that require international experience are provided with opportunities.”
Netball Australia has confirmed Clare McMeniman will resume the position of acting Captain in the absence of Laura Geitz, who is being rested, with Caitlin Bassett and Layton as acting Vice-Captains for the Quad Series.

The World Champions, Australian Diamonds, will host the New Zealand Silver Ferns at Qudos Bank Arena – the same venue which saw the Aussies claim the 2015 Netball World Cup Gold Medal in August last year, in front of a world record netball crowd. It is the first time the traditional rivals will meet at the venue since.
