The Australian 21/U Team has made an impressive start to the 2017 Netball World Youth Cup in Gaborone, Botswana, claiming three consecutive wins to open the tournament. The feat seems even more incredible when you consider their lowest winning margin was 53 goals in their first match-up!
Head Coach Tania Obst has given court time to all 10 players, including NSW’s Kiera Austin, Claire O’Brien, Teigan O’Shannassy and Jamie-Lee Price, across the three games; an 86-33 win over Zimbabwe on Day 1, 119-12 victory over Singapore on Day 2, followed up with a 93-32 win against Barbados yesterday for Day 3.
The competition will enjoy a rest day today, Tuesday 11 July, before the action continues tomorrow – Australia meeting South Africa at 7pm AEST for their final regular pool fixture before the Quarter Finals commence on Thursday 13 July.
Netball Australia caught up with Obst following their win against Barbados, who said the intensity is certainly lifting as the tournament moves on.
“Tonight’s match was more physical than we have experienced so far, and what was pleasing was our ability to adjust our game to ensure we retained possession of the ball,” Obst said.
“Each area of the court is developing game by game and it is pleasing to see adjustments and improvements made all over the court.”
