FAST5 netball this weekend!

The FAST5 Netball World Series is BACK with the 2014 tournament being held at Auckland’s Trust Arena this weekend, starting tomorrow Saturday 8 November.

It is the third instalment of the modified netball game, which sees five players from each team on the court at one time, with three scoring zones and rolling substitutions… plus plenty more unique rules!

Defending champions the FAST5 Ferns will host five teams from around the world, including; the Malawi Queens, the Jamaican Sunshine Girls, England Fives, SPAR South Africa FAST5 and last year’s Runners-Up the Australian FAST5 Flyers.

The Aussies – which features four NSW juniors – will open the action against the Sunshine Girls at 11am AEST on Saturday, with nine matches played on the opening day before play continues at 10:30am AEST on Sunday.  The Finals will close play from 4:15pm AEST, and will be contested based upon the teams’ ladder positions following the final preliminary round match.

2015 NSW Swift recruit Jade Clarke will once again be suiting up for her home side England during the two-day tournament, and will continue in a caretaker Captaincy role with Pamela Cookey still sidelined with an Achilles injury.

See the full draw, plus team lists, below.

Fox Sports are broadcasting the entire tournament LIVE on Channel 503 (Fox Sports 3), so make sure you tune in and cheer the Aussie girls (and Jade Clarke!) throughout the weekend.

Don’t have Pay TV? Don’t worry! Netball New Zealand has set up an amazing online guide to all things FAST5 – click here to visit the Netball NZ website for match results, statistics, news, plus much more.  Netball Australia will also be on the ground with the FAST5 Flyers providing social media updates throughout the tournament.

In 2008, the International Netball Federation (INF) developed a new format of netball called FastNet – a six-a-side version of the traditional games which multiple scoring zones amongst the modified rules.  It was launched in 2009 during the World Netball Series in Manchester, and would be held in England until 2012.

Following a review of FastNet, a further modified version of the game was introduced to what we now call FAST5 – a five-a-side game with further rule modifications, including rolling substitutes.  This was first introduced at the World Netball Series in Auckland in November, 2012.

Earlier this week, INF President Molly Rhone has confirmed another review will take place on the modified version of the game, with negotiations in place to move the tournament to another country for 2015-2017.  An announcement on the new location is expected within the coming weeks.
