New South Wales representatives’ Paige Hadley, Erin Bell and Sharon Kelly were celebrated for their achievements during 2013 at Sunday’s Australian Netball Awards held on the Gold Coast.
NSW Swifts’ midcourter Paige Hadley was named Australian 21/U Player of the Year, Erin Bell was named Australia’s ANZ Championship Player of the Year, and Sharon Kelly was named Australian Umpire of the Year for the 12th year in a row.
It’s been a phenomenal year for 21 year-old Paige Hadley. Paige featured in all 13 games for the Swifts in season 2013, she received MVP honors against Northern Mystics, claimed silver at the 2013 World Youth Netball Championships in Glasgow, made her Australian Diamonds debut against Malawi on Wednesday 16 October, was named the game MVP in only her second Diamonds appearance (19 October) and will again represent Australia at the 2013 Fast5 Netball World Series to be played in Auckland in November.
Bell’s award was richly deserved after playing a pivotal role in the Adelaide Thunderbirds’ ANZ Championship success in 2013, with the 26 year-old goal shooter was also named MVP for the Grand Final against the Queensland Firebirds.
As for Sharon Kelly, to be named Umpire of the Year for twelve straight years is simply an amazing feat in any walk of life. Kelly is highly respected by her peers, players and coaches, both at home and abroad. The mother of three remains the world’s leading international umpire and was rewarded for her performances throughout the season by being appointed to umpire the 2013 ANZ Championship Grand Final, her sixth straight ANZ Championship Grand Final.
Netball NSW would also like to congratulate the other award winners at this year’s event.
